Education UK Exhibition 2009 went through successfully on 27 and 28 February 2009 at Direction Exhibition Convention Centre Hall, United World Trade Centre, Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal.
The two days event was an ideal platform for the participating institutions to disseminate the information about the institution, course options and different facilities on offer for the international students.
As the previous year, the guests (representatives of the participating institutions) were accommodated at Radisson Hotel and the exhibition venue was Direction Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), a very good location for the exhibitions in Nepal’s largest shopping complex. The participating guests were provided pick up and drop up facilities from the venue to the hotel and vice versa through the official coach.
On 26th February 2009, British Council gave a briefing describing the modern education system in Nepal as well as objective of organizing such a segmented event. The briefing concentrated on the following areas:
1. Education System in Nepal
2. Role of the British Council in promoting UK Education in Nepal.
3. Popularity of different courses provided by UK institutions.
4. Changing trend in the interest of Nepalese students towards British Education.
Mr. Ngawang Tamang, Education Promotion Officer from the British Council briefed the participants as well as addressed their queries.
An added attraction of the briefing was address by the representatives from British High Commission, New Delhi. The High Commission representatives briefed about the UK visa requirement for a student, documentation, new point based system and other visa related issues. The participants were also involved in Question Answer session with the representatives from the High Commission.
The participants were given the Exhibition Hand Book that included the event’s program and other important schedules. Each exhibitor was given a packet that contained exhibitor badges and essential stationeries required during the event. The briefing was followed by a light refreshment and stand set-up.
On 28th February, Opening Ceremony was organized to mark the official opening of the exhibition. Ms. Paula Middleton, Country Director, British Council gave the welcome speech. The exhibition was officially inaugurated by lighting the traditional panas by the Chief Guest His Excellency, Dr. Andrew Hall, British Ambassador to Nepal. His Excellency also addressed the Opening Ceremony with his valuable words, ideas, suggestions and best wishes. Mr. Keshab Khatri, Director, Career Search Pvt. Ltd. concluded the ceremony by giving vote of thanks. After the ceremony the Chief Guest accompanied by Ms. Paula Middleton, Mr. Ngawang Tamang and Mr. Keshab Khatri opened the exhibition to general visitors by cutting the ribbon and inspected the stands of the participating institutions.
Twenty UK institutions participated in the exhibition among which fifteen were state universities, four state colleges and one independent college. British Council at its one stand did a survey on ‘student decision making’ procedure in terms of abroad study. Fifty three students completed the survey during two days event. At the other stand, the representatives from the British High Commission were available on both the days to interact with the students on visa requirement and new point based system.
To make the event more successful and informative for the parent and students, there were daily Presentations by the officials from the participating institutions. On both days, representatives from British High Commission had mass briefing and interaction sessions in the seminar hall.
Despite the energy crises hammering the country, the exhibition was backed up by effective alternate power source. That led to the smooth running of the exhibition and seminars.
Considering the hectic schedule of the participants, the organizers this year skipped off sight seeing program that used to be in the previous years.
Facilities during the exhibition included internet facility to the participants, fax, photocopy and local/international telephone service. The effort was made to provide internet connectivity to each participant who ever had laptops in their stand.
The number of foot fall as compared to the last year was almost half. But the visitors who made in were highly prospective as assessed through the registration forms. As per feedbacks from the institutions’ officials, they had quality visitors on both days and could well speak to most of them. Around two thousand and eight hundred visitors benefited from the exhibition in two days. The visitors included students, parents, agents and information gatherers. More focus was given to invite the students through invitation cards distributed through various channels.
On 28th February 2008 the exhibition was closed at 5:30 p.m. British Council hosted a Closing Dinner in honour of the exhibitors of Education UK Exhibition-2009 at Kaiser Café in Garden of Dreams.
